Recently, I had the unexpected pleasure of participating in an art contest, an experience that left me both honored and humbled. For me, photography has always been a deeply personal expression– a way to connect with the world around me and share my perspective with others. I never considered submitting my work to a contest, but was gently guided by my close friend, Susan Buice. After toying with the idea I took a chance on myself.
I was completely taken aback to find out that I placed first in the photography category for the second annual Cherokee Magazine Art Contest. I'm still in disbelief.
I am grateful to Cherokee Magazine and the judges for selecting my photograph as it is extremely personal to me. I took this still life using flowers my aunt bought for a wedding shower. They sat on the counter for a few days, and as they started to wilt,
I’m not sure that I’ll ever do an art contest again, but it did give me the confidence boost I needed.
